Mirrors and Shiny Objects
The fascination that birds have for mirrors relates to their strong desire to have friends and relationships. When they see their reflection, it is like seeing another bird. Much to their delight the reflecting bird seems friendly and attentive.
If given a choice, birds would choose people as friends rather than mirrors. Mirrors, though, can be tough competition. The reflected bird is always present whenever the bird looks for him. A sort of constant companion that's there on demand. Easily the reflection can become the best friend and the owner only a secondary friend
With no mirror or other reflecting surface present, pet birds focus attention on their owner.
