Dr. Kathryn Montgomery
Meurs is leading the Cardiomyopathy Study supported
by AKC and the GDCA. The study is to try to determine
a genetic marker for cardiomyopathy.
If she is successful in finding a gene that causes
cardiomyopathy, the future of the breed will be
forever changed in preventing this terrible death.
When we can determine by a blood sample from
our puppies, their genetic predisposition, our breeding
programs will be improved to the extent that we
will no longer have such things as heart disease,
cancer, etc. caused by inherited genes. We
can put a STOP to it!!!
Dr. Meurs is a very
helpful, willing person. I contacted her
via email and gave her my vets' name & number
and told her of my problems. She called
my vet the next day and arranged for delivery
of all required equipment. She contacted
me to tell me she had arranged it. She wants pedigrees
(marked with affected dogs) and cardio reports
(or verification of DCM) on affected dogs that
are submitted to her study. She wants relatives'
pedigrees as well. She used to collect blood
and tissue samples and may begin doing so again.
So please call her and find out what she needs.
