Being aware of these normal conditions makes it easier to observe if your dog is not "normal" when acting ill. Normal Respiration: differs with SIZE of the dog breed - ASK YOUR VET! Mucous membranes: Should be PINK, not RED or WHITE To take your dogs temperature with a digital rectal thermometer, cover with a thermometer cot (available from any pharmacy) dip in KY or Vaseline, insert about 1 inch into rectum (maybe a bit less with tiny dogs) for 60 seconds.
