This page is dedicated
to my "Kai"- Kai Dane's Pacific Explorer; born Dec 9, 1989, out of
Ch. Kai-Danes Precious Gem by Ch.
Sheenwater Georgia
Pacific, breeder Juhli MacIntyre and Sue Cates.
I first saw
Kai, and the rest of the litter, in Hawaii when he was about 6 weeks
old - before the breeder had decided who to keep for show. They were
a gorgeous bunch of puppies and I felt I would be happy with any
of them. When he was 10 weeks old the breeder said he was ready to
come to Guam. Unfortunately at that time I became ill and had to
go to Hawaii
for medical
tests. Sue agreed to hold him for me. She picked me up at
the hospital one day and took me and Kai to a park where I could see him
and play with him. He was such a sweet boy that all I could do was
kiss him over and over. When I got ready to go home Kai was on the
plane with me.
Kai was a very vocal boy and one who always wanted everything done on time. If schedules were missed he told you over and over. Woowoowoowoo. He wanted breakfast, trip to the farm, return from farm, dinner and everything else according to his clock.
I have told the story before, but will tell it again, about Kai and the litter of puppies. Kalani had pups and Kai was determined to go in and see them. When she went out he would sneak in, stand over the whelping box slowly wagging his

Kai was always the omega in the pack. Anytime we brought in a new pup it learned quickly that Kai was a pushover and took advantage of him.
When Kai was almost 8 he started having hip troubles which became worse through the next year. My vet had discussed the possibility of hip replacement. However, that wasn't to be. We noticed a bad odor from his mouth, took him in for a thorough teeth cleaning and the vet found a small tumor on the lower jaw. The biopsy showed it to be melanosarcoma which had already metastasized. The lab report gave him 4 months or less.
For the past few weeks he has steadily gone down hill. The tumor grew very large and had a bloody discharge. We had to change the water every time he drank out of the pan because of all the crud in the water. What really said how awful he felt was that he stopped talking. Even for his evening biscuit, which he still wanted, he did not vocalize. Then he stopped wanting to go to the farm with us. He always went and begged for the goodie we feed the peacocks (Iams Chunks); but now he didn't want to go. Three days ago he was drinking water and the pan filled with blood.
We knew that
the time had come. Our vet met us at the farm. We thought that
would be the happiest place for Kai. He even followed me part way
to where I feed the peacocks and wanted his goodie. Then he went
to lie down on his bed which we brought from home. When the vet arrived,
Kai didn't even get up he hurt so much. We held him, talked to him
and told him how much we loved him while he quietly went to sleep.
Sadly,
