I recommend a combination of techniques culled from several sources that serves as a firm, yet kind form of reinforcement training. I designed this program with Great Danes in mind, but it is very effective with all breeds and temperaments EXCEPT Aggressive (to people) dogs. TRAINING A PROBLEM DOG Lyn J. Richards, copyright 1996, last upgrade 2001 |
| Training a problem dog is a challenge that
many of us are faced with at least once in our lives. I recommend a combination
of techniques culled from several sources that serves as a firm, yet kind
form of reinforcement training.
This training also works well with an extremely fearful or submissive dog. One of my main sources is Susan Finlay Ailsby's K?9 Military School Training Program. Another source is Peter J.Vollmers' Super Puppy series. Calming Signals, by Turid Rugaas, has a lot of information which will allow you to understand and read your dog better. Daniel Tortoras "The Right Dog for You", is an extremely clear source for behavioral characteristics of most breeds, and strongly recommended reading. A library full of other training books has gone into the making of my training routines, a list too long to numerate here. The point that I am making is that a training program should be culled from many sources and tailored to fit your own needs. I designed this program with Great Danes in mind, but it is very effective with all breeds and temperaments EXCEPT for Aggressive dogs. (BTW there are VERY few really aggressive dogs, ask me if you are unsure. PLEASE go to a behaviorist or Professional Trainer for help with Aggression, it can be a very dangerous problem. Below is an outline of the basic program. If you are interested, the purchase price is $19.95 US which includes Shipping. Please e-mail me to request the program, I PROMISE to get right back to you with a response. My phone time is part of what you get with the program, feel free to call me with questions at any time! | Below is a list of exercises which
will foster your role as leader in the eyes of your dog, and place him
in a subordinate position, while furnishing him with the security an Alpha
dog provides. A description of the exercises and their functions is part
of the program layout!

| The way to implement this program is all
at once. You can ease into it, but it will not have the fastest
effect you are looking to produce. A dog with mild behavioral problems
will benefit from specific exercises, but since the
program is not punishment oriented, any dog, especially shy ones
will benefit from its structure and discipline. You will find your dog
blossoming and becoming more confident and outgoing as you progress.
Order this program today! You'll be pleasantly surprised at how little work it involves, and how GREAT the results will be! |

| Good Morning Lynnie! I see you're a night owl too. I would be delighted for you to use any quotes you like from me in any of your Problem Dog Program advertising. I will not say anything that I am not very sincere about or that I would not tell anyone else if they ask (or maybe if they don't ask! <G>). I REALLY am excited about our progress,
and now realize that maybe I spoil her just a little too much. She has
the run of the house and back yard, but she is not a demanding dog at all.
She is sooooo sweet that I find it hard to demand that she "do something"
in return for having fun or getting treats. But already I see what a difference
it is making in her response to me when I do give her a command. Ya made
a believer out of me! |

| Hi Lyn- As I sit here typing, I am tethered to a bone headed Doberman who spent the day today at the vets' office :-( . Casey got into it with *someone* last night, late (I suspect Dogger the Alpha-mutt) and had to have six stitches in his left shoulder. He is *not* particularly happy about having to follow me around, although not really fighting it, either. We are encountering difficulties with getting tangled up in other dogs, though. He's being very responsive to the Problem Dog training. So, we're working on it...I'll keep you informed. BTW, Casey's song goes "Drivin' that train, high on sniffin' dog butts again, Casey Jones you better, watch your speed..." (He's named for the Grateful Dead song _Casey Jones_...) While we're doing this umbilical cord deal, would it be best to *not* let him share my couch (i.e. make him remain on the floor)? Usually, Casey Jones has "couch time" with me every evening, and, seems to have his "bad behavior" days the day after we've had an evening without his couch time. OTOH, I realize that allowing him up here with me may be compromising my Alpha-bitch status. Tough to know what to do...Thanks for the help! Ana & Casey Jones (who at least no longer weighs more than I do!) |

| Hi Lyn! Everything is going great!
She doesn't jump on people anymore!! She gets very excited, but
I put her in a down-stay until the folks can get their shoes off...then
she does the (sniff-sniff) hiwhervyoubeen, whatchabindoin (sniff-sniff),
oh and of course the willow-branch tail (I get that end), wag-whap-wag-whap...ouch!
She still talks back sometimes when I tell her to do/not do something.
I just say "quit!" and look away/ignore her...it works!
Anyway, it's her first Birthday tomorrow!! I am so excited! I will be bringing her to work with me so people can see how she's grown. I gave her a bath the other day. I lifted her (a two part series) into the tub and she just stood/sat there! She's so good. Then, of course, Major Zoomies after she got out. Don't ever think you go unappreciated....Thanks alot for the note. Take care.. Sherry and Chelsa <mcintosh@duke.usask.ca> |

| Lyn, Thought you would like an update on Titan's training. Your Problem Dog training program has been a big help. After talking with you I realized what I originally thought was just pushy puppy behavior was very dominate behavior on Titan's part. After reading thru the program I decided to implement the whole program.. all at once. At 8 months he was just starting to really test the limits. I saw a change in his behavior within ONE WEEK! and steady improvement over the next 6 weeks. At that time I modified some of the restrictions, i.e. toys. He has some toys that are his to play with as he chooses, unless of course I decide I want them then he has to immediately give it to me. We also have a special toy closet with the toys that I play with him, he only gets those toys one at a time and when I chose.. when I am done playing with him.. toys go back in the closet or at anytime during the game if he refuses to give up a toy, game over. Overall the program was a big success and when I notice he is backsliding I go back to a stricter routine for just a few days and he comes right back in line. BTW Titan is now 15 months old. The other great idea was the long down.. every day! Now when I tell Titan.. I'm busy go lay down he will go and lay quietly until I am done. I used the command in conjunction with the daily down/stays during training and it has made this so much nicer. Thanks again for the help |

| HI Lynnie.......
We are using the Problem Dog Program.....and
it works! As you know.....Neptune *was* our problem child... Just
training him to sit on command made a world of difference!...Also letting
him know that WE are the bosses...not him... It all works. Now
Mannie has taken over the dominant position.....Mannie was well trained
even before we got him, but now we regularly drill him on commands....
He can boss the "lil ones", but not us. All three are doing really
well. The only problem is that when we issue the "sit" command
......all three butts hit the floor...no matter who we are talking to!
LOL....... |
