SAGES STORY FOLLOW UP

I received the faxed copy of Sage's autopsy report on 4/17/00. They
tested for the following:
       1) Ehrlichia platys IFA (LSU)       results: Negative,             comments: <1:40
       2) Rocky Mt. Spotted Fever (UofTN)           comment: <1:40      comment: Antibody titers of less than 1:40 are        considered negative;  titers of 1:40 or greater are considered positive.
        3) Anticoag Screen  results: not detected with the following toxins included in the Anticoagulant Screen:
                               Fumarin
                               Racumin
                               Warfarin
                               Coumachlor
                               Difenacoum
                               Brodifacoum
                               Diphacinone
                               Pindone
                               Valone
                               Chlorophacinone
                               Bromadiolone
                               4-OH Warfarin
                               6-OH Warfarin
                               7-OH Warfarin
                               8-OH Warfarin
                               Difethialone

This next section is directly from the report.

Comments: The most likely cause of this dog's death is cardiovascular collapse resulting from hemorrhage noted clinically and histologically in conjunction with the severe changes decribed in the heart.  Of particular interest is the absence of magakaryocytes (platelet precursor cells) from all tissues examined, especially in light of the clinical history of thrombocytopenia, hemorrhage, and the presence of a regenerative anemia.

Given this finding, a defect in platelet production (progenitor cell, stem cell, CFU_Meg, etc.) must be considered a potential cause of the thromocytopenia.  The immune-mediated destruction of megakaryocytic precursor cells has been described in dogs.  It should be noted that the most critical site of platelet production, the bone marrow, was not provided for histopathologic examination: therefore, further interpretation is severely hindered.

MICROSCOPIC DIAGNOSES:
1.  Moderate, Acute, Pulmonary Edema
2.  Pneumoconiosis
3.  Extramedullary Hematopoiesis, Splenic and Hepatic
4.  Moderate, Acute, Multifocal Renal Interstitial Hemorrhage
5.  Marked to Severe, Acute, Multifocalo to Coalescing Myocardial Interstitial Hemorrhage with Edema
6.  Mild, Acute, Diffuse Vacuolar Change, Hepatocellular
7.  Moderate, Acute Vascular Congestion, Meningeal  with Mild Perivascular Hemorrhage.

I believe that Sage had a borderline Autoimmune Disease.  She would bruise easily but had no problems with her blood clotting in the past; ex: she was spayed.  An example I was given by one of her Vets, was this:  It was
as if she was standing at the edge of a cliff on sure footing until something  (Revolution, in this case) came along and pushed her over the edge.

I want to thank everyone for the responses I received from my story of Sage.  She was a loyal and loving dog.  We miss her everyday!  Please if you have a dog with a bruising history like Sage, PLEASE Think carefully before using this product.
Sincerely,
Terri Eddy

Another tidbit for you to digest here: Pfizer is ALSO the manufacturer of RIMADYL, which is also the subject of some close scrutiny for its involvement in illness and deaths in some canine patients who were taking it.
